From the Kimberley to Torquay

The green lawns of the Torquay Bowls Club are a far cry from the red earth of the Kimberley in north-west Australia but that did not deter nine Aboriginal children from there enjoying their first go at the game of bowls.

The youngsters from the remote community of Blliluna, 1070 kilometres inland from Broome, recently spent a day (22/11) in the region during which they enjoyed sailing on Corio Bay and bowls at Torquay.

Accompanied by four of their teachers the youngsters spent a week in Melbourne and the Geelong region, seeing the sites and trying activities that are foreign to their daily living.

The trip south was arranged by Torquay resident Greta Webb, an emergency nurse who periodically helps out in remote communities in the north-west.

During their week down south, the youngsters not only sailed and played bowls but their itinerary also included surfing, visiting the Eureka Sky Deck, watching a NBL basketball game, visiting Werribee Zoo and the Melbourne Aquarium and also visiting the North Melbourne football club.

At Torquay, the youngsters slipped quickly into the game of bowls with the occasional shot that drew applause from older bowlers with an eye for talent.
