FFV Provisional 2 Men: Surfcoast (7) v Western Eagles (1)

Surfcoast Prov 2 men smashed the ladder leaders the former national league club the Western Eagles 7/1 on the weekend to secure promotion to Provisional League 1 in 2011.
This gives Surfcoast two promotions in three years after winning a place in the state leagues.
The weekend effort was especially good, with Surfcoast putting in a commanding performance in a game of high quality where the momentum shifted for long periods.
Surfcoast were on fire early, crashing in two goals to first Jack Taylor and then Jordon White to cap off brilliant team play that put the Western Eagles right on the back foot.
However, the Western Eagles hit back, scoring from a header to an unmarked player, then getting right on top towards the end of the first half as they looked extremely dangerous with lightening runs down the wings.
In the second half some smart tactical moves shut down the Western Eagles wingers, and Surfcoast's attacks started to turn to gold.
An awesome free kick from Matt Roberts was a dagger to the heart of the Western Eagles with another classic cross and goal from Jack Taylor to Jordon White saw the opposition's resolve crumble and a final goal-fest.
At the end of the game, with both teams being promoted, it was a very happy and joyful scene, with both clubs the winners.

U16 Girls: Surfcoast (2) v Surfside (1)

Surfcoast Under 16s Girls turned on a strong performance to win the grand final this weekend.
Although it was for large parts of the game a scrappy affair and far from Surfcoast best performance, the girls put together a number of very nice sequences of play and stood up to Surfside's physical style.
In the first half Surfcoast dominated and had numerous chances to put the game beyond reach, however the only goal came from an early breakaway from from Sage Campbell.
In what has been typical of the Surfcoast v Surfside contests, Surfside despite have little of the possession, scored midway through the first half to equalise from a goal mouth scramble.
The second half was a very scrappy affair, with Surfcoast again shading Surfside in possession and team play.
The highlights were another outstanding defensive performances by Lauren Burnham, Amelia Hooper and Tegan Llewellyn who completely blanketed the dangerous Maddie Bennett.
The decisive moment came with another terrific Surfcoast build-up with a looping aerial ball fed back onto the penalty spot by Maddie Lambert volleyed home by Sage Campbell.
A great bit of set play that Surfcoast had trained for all year paid off to be a grand final winning move.
The Surfcoast girls, most of whom are actually under 14s, can be very proud of their efforts this year playing above their age group and being the stand out team in the competition for team play.

U14 Girls: Surfcoast (0) v Kardinia (1)

After losing their very first game 9-0 to Surfside, the Yellows were proud of their achievements to have even made it to the grand final. They were matched up against Kardinia, who finished top of the ladder and had only lost one game of the season. None the less they went into the game with their heads held high and confident that their best football could bring Kardinia down.
The fist half displayed some of the best football these girls have ever played and Kardinia were struggling to keep up. With the ball in Kardinia's half for most of the 30 minutes, it was all Yellow. Georgia did a great job in goals, only having to make two saves. The girls were patient with the ball and it seemed like a goal was just around the corner. Then in the last 10 minutes, Jess placed a beautiful ball wide to Molly who tried to put it through for Sophie and as it hit the defender, Sophie pushed the ball out on the rebound and with her pace was unstoppable. A one on one contest with the goalie and all the spectators were sure that it was a goal but Kardinia's biggest asset is their goalkeeper who plays for Victoria and to her credit made an excellent save. Halftime it was still nil all.

It was a bit of a shaky start in the second half, and it took the girls a while to settle back into their routine from the first half. Kardinia were playing all out attack and the Yellows were finding it difficult to bring the ball out of their half. Rachel and Jess were doing an excellent job in defence stopping the ball in the middle and bringing it out wide but Kardinia just kept persisting. After 20 minutes of continuously working to clear the ball out of defence, the girls fell asleep for about 30 seconds and that's all it took; leaving one un-marked player wide to pass it to another un-marked payer in the centre. The Best and Fairest winner of 2010 and Kardinia's biggest striker was one on one with Lucy who had no chance when she struck the ball hard and fast in the top right corner.
The girls were devastated as we only had 10 minutes left, but despite their best efforts and their fighting spirit; they were unable to break through an all out defensive Kardinia. It was a disappointing loss as the Yellows played much better football than their opposition and they should be proud of how far they've come since the start of the season. There is always next year, girls! And at the rate you're learning and growing, you girls will be a force to reckon with in the years to come. So keep your heads up, congratulations and thank-you for an awesome year.

U12 Girls: Surfcoast (0) v Geelong Rangers (1)

The Legends faced off against a surprising Geelong Rangers for the grand final after Rangers had beaten second best team Surf Side 2-0 on Thursday Afternoon. The ground was in top nick after all the weather over the past month and the girls were all excited the big day had arrived.
The Legends were missing Mikayla from the team which was always going to be a big loss, as over the past 2 months she has grown an extra leg in speed and a few inches in height as well. She has been good for 2 goals a game of late. Her pace and strength this time assisting her dancing team-mates in Sydney this weekend to hopefully win at the nationals.
The Legends started well and took it right up to the bigger Ranger's girls but struggled to get the ball freely past the defenders to have clear shots at goal. Jade and Annie eventually breaking the lines, striking several shots but kicking straight at the goalie and failing to hit the net. The Rangers had their own problems with limited opportunities to score with Bella, Louisa, and Greeny cutting off the attacks. Amy, having returned to the team from illness, found some fine form and was busy running around the front creating many opportunities by centring the ball in front of the net but having no support to strike the winners. Taylah also playing well but unable to kick those freakish goals she is renowned for.
And then it happened. Rangers kicked long into a hole and got the ball past the defenders leaving Willow in goals to try and stop the inevitable. Willow ran hard and fast at the attacker trying to put her off but the Rangers girl managed to just get the ball past and into the net for a 1-0 lead. Willow has made some great saves this year and cannot be expected to stop them all.
Being one of the only times for the year the Legends have been behind in a game was going to test character as the second half started.
The Rangers, realised by now that Mikayla was missing from the side, took a punt and double teamed Jade in attack. Jade had to work hard to beat 2 big defenders which she did frequently, but could not get a power kick at goal due to the close marking. All other girls played their hearts out and once again had the ball in the Legends half for the majority of the game but just could not find the net. Frequent attacks just failed to see the ball penetrate. To the Rangers credit their defence stuck staunch. The whistle eventually blew with the Legends having their first loss of the year. An honourable close loss that could have gone either way.
No tears from the Legends though. They had too much to celebrate. The Legends have had a great year, with over half the players not having kicked a soccer ball before the season commenced, and proving they are a top team. Great friendships have been made between the girls, with players from Airyies Inlet, Fair Haven, Belmont, Jan Juc, and Torquay joining the Legends this year. Also it has been great to meet new parents with many friendships also being formed. Many a wave has been caught since the start of the year (while wives thought we were doing the shopping!). Skills and team work have increased dramatically throughout the year. Several girls will move forward to play 14's next year to be replaced from the Academy girls who will enjoy themselves immensely in this competition.
The Legends coming away from the day with lots of Bling having won the League Premiership (a massive gold trophy and pennant), the runner up pennant for the final, individual trophies for the latter, and Jade taking out the well deserved runner up best player for the comp, especially considering the coach benched her frequently allowing younger players more game time and missing several games. Congratulations on a great year Legends!!
