New Sports Grounds Just Months Away

There’s movement on the side of the Surf Coast Highway as the new Surf Coast Community and Civic Precinct rapidly takes shape.

Earth works on AFL-standard ovals, netball courts and soccer pitches are well in progress; while the concrete slab for new civic building, next to the highway, has been poured with concrete columns now being built.

Final design for the second storey of the sporting pavilion building is progressing steadily, while civil works on roads in the precinct and the construction of a new intersection on the Surf Coast Highway, which will adjoin the current intersection with Beacon Boulevard and the West Coast Business Park; are about to begin.
Mayor, Cr Libby Coker, said the construction work on the 50-acre precinct represented an exciting time for the Surf Coast community.

“These are the sporting, civic and community facilities for a new future on the Surf Coast, taking shape right now,” Cr Coker said.

“As the weather continues to improve for summer, steady progress will continue with the sporting fields ready for use next year; which is a really exciting development for local clubs and local families.

“The Community and Civic Precinct is Council’s biggest investment in community infrastructure.  It has been made at a time and in a manner that is financially sustainable and responsible.  It also presents a huge step towards meeting the significant infrastructure demands our growing shire has.”

The first stage of the Community and Civic Precinct will deliver one AFL oval four state-of-the-art netball courts and a competition-standard synthetic soccer pitch in March 2011.  Design work for another AFL oval and an additional soccer pitch will also be completed.

The new Civic Building, set to be complete in December 2011, will be a flagship in Environmentally Sustainable Design.  It will also incorporate flexible community space and more facilities to help boost Council’s ability to deliver services.

The Federal Government, with the assistance of local member Darren Cheeseman, has contributed $4m to the project, and the Victorian Government, with assistance from state local member, Michael Crutchfield, has now contributed $1m.
