The Torquay greens are looking great, and playing absolutely beautifully for this time of year.
The long hours of work put in before winter and again over the past two months by greenkeeper extraordinaire Bill Hamshere and his band of loyal workers has really paid off, with the running surfaces coming along brilliantly. Word is that they will be running about 16 seconds! We have already has plenty of compliments on the presentation of the club from members and visitors, with the surrounds coming into spring brilliantly and the new line-marking machine a big hit.
Most bowlers are highly impressed with the professional look the new line-painting gizmo provides, and the hardy souls who get out in the early morning to set up the greens are full of appreciation of the fact that they don’t have to spend eons painstakingly renewing the chalk lines every day.
The women’s pennant sides and social bowlers have enjoyed the fruits of all this labour, while the men’s pennant teams will have to wait another week to get to play as a combination of the UCI world cycling championships and a replay of the AFL grand final proved too much for the GDBA which called off the first round of pennant competition.
Despite that, there was a great roll-up to the pre-season pie night last week where the club selectors and coaching team outlined their plans and ambitions for this year. The club has set a target of all four teams – Division 1, Division 3, Division 5 and Division 10 – reaching finals of their respective competitions.
They emphasised that the added depth in the club, achieved through the influx of a group of experienced bowlers and the addition of some younger blood from the Twilighters should hake these ambitious targets achievable.
This week the men’s section begins its monthly tournament series, which this year offers great prize money and a special aggregate thanks to the generous sponsorship of Hocking Stuart Real Estate.
