The Surf Coast’s famed Grasstrees are under attack from thieves; putting the ecology of local nature reserves at risk.
Surf Coast Shire is seeking information on the theft of several of the indigenous Grasstrees from Grasstree Park after controlled burns were completed in May this year.
The removal of grasstrees from Grasstree Park is an offence under the Victorian Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988. Fines of $6107 apply for breaches of the act.
Council is stepping up patrols to protect the trees, including on weekends; and video surveillance is also being used.
Mayor, Cr Dean Webster, said the thefts were irresponsible.
“The theft of indigenous species from community nature reserves is an act of environmental vandalism that cannot be tolerated,” Cr Webster said.
“Grasstrees do not transplant easily and more than 80% that are moved will die in the first year. Thieves doing a rushed job are especially likely to end up with a number of dead Grasstrees, which is bad news for all,” Cr Webster said.
“Council takes the theft of these mature trees seriously. If anyone sees a garden that suddenly has mature Grasstrees in it, we urge them to contact Council or Victoria Police.”
Anyone trading mature Grasstrees can only do so under permit from the Department of Sustainability and Environment. Legally sold Grasstrees from nurseries must come with tags indicating they have been cultivated legally.
