A better way to enjoy the Surf Coast

A new local business is helping locals and tourists alike to get the most out of the Surf Coast's amazing beauty with uniquely designed and catered walking trails.

The Surf Coast Walk between Torquay and Lorne is being transformed into an iconic walking experience with the reconstruction of walking trails. The Surf Coast Shire, the State government and GORCC are combining funds to upgrade the walk to a world class standard. Locals and visitors alike will be able to safely access the trails to enjoy this environment as well as develop their fitness and sense of wellbeing.

Director of Surf Coast Walks Regina Gleeson believes that many people will love to walk on this iconic trail and that it will be a major drawcard to the area.  She thinks that visitors to the area and also locals often need an introduction to these walks to appreciate all that is on offer. "I have often had walkers tell me how much more they get out of the experience when they have someone to point out the special things.”

Regina Gleeson has been an outdoor educator for twenty years and combines her outdoor skills with her knowledge of the coast. Her business takes all of the hassles out of walking allowing people to just focus on enjoying the experience.  “People just want to come along and enjoy the walk without worrying about maps and navigation, car shuttles, permits, safety or first aid. The guides at Surf Coast Walks are tertiary graduates who are very experienced, have first aid qualifications and have a passion for this beautiful coastline.

With gourmet food, fine coffee and teas, and all transport arrangements organised, all people need is a day pack, some walking shoes and a sense of adventure. The guides do the rest and share their knowledge of the geology, the plants and the unique animals of the area.

According to Ms Gleeson: “the focus of the walks is to poke into a rock pool, to explore a rainforest gully or to spot a yellow-tailed black cockatoo as you wander along. Our approach is to journey in a minimal impact way through this unique environment.”

Walks are organised to accommodate all fitness levels from beginners through to people wanting a challenging experience and can include walking along beaches, cliff tops, cool rainforests and heath land trails. Adult groups or families can be catered for. Ms. Gleeson believes that people are looking for experiences which allow them to enjoy local produce as well as engaging in healthy activities. Walks can be half day, full day or multi day. People wanting longer experiences can stay in local B&Bs and sample local produce, fine wines and a massage.
