Finding suitable spots across the Surf Coast to walk the pooch is now much easier thanks to a new Council brochure released this week.
The new brochure shows the dog controls that apply within all major Surf Coast townships, including off leash areas and dog-free zones. Importantly, it reminds dog owners of the need to keep their canine friends on leash when not in one of the designated off leash areas.
According to Mayor Dean Webster, the new brochure replaces the previous individual township brochures, which many local and visiting dog owners found cumbersome and impractical.
“Previously, a dog owner wanting information about where they could walk their dog anywhere in the shire would need nine separate brochures. All that information is now contained in one simple, user friendly brochure,” explained Cr Webster.
“This will make it much easier for dog owners to fully understand the where, when and how of dog controls in townships along the coast from Torquay to Lorne and inland from Moriac to Winchelsea and Deans Marsh.
“The brochure features a series of simple township maps with off leash, timeshare and dog-free zones clearly identified by colour codes. It also contains basic information about responsible dog ownership.
“Council recognises that dogs are an important part of many people’s lives, particularly here on the Surf Coast, which has one of Victoria’s highest rates of dog ownership.
“Apart from being of assistance to local and visiting dog owners, combining nine brochures into one means the new brochure is also much more cost-effective to produce,” Cr Webster said.
Called Dog Regulations on the Surf Coast: An Introduction to Off Leash Areas for Dogs, the new brochure is now available online (www.surfcoast.vic.gov.au/dogreview.htm) and from all Surf Coast Visitor Information Centres and the Council offices in Grossmans Road.
