Torquay’s High Tide Festival “Seaweed” Installation Exhibition

Torquay is set to captivate lovers of art next weekend as celebrated local artists exhibit art in non-traditional settings as a part of the “Seaweed” Installation Exhibition and ART TRAIL.

The “Seaweed” Installation Exhibition is a highlight of the High Tide Festival, with artworks dotted throughout the heart of Torquay.

“The quality of artists and the vast diversity of artworks this year is particularly dynamic,” event co-ordinator Rebecca Hosking said. “The week-end will be a veritable smorgasbord of art.

“We encourage people to explore and discover the art trail by foot or by bike, in family and friends groups, to enjoy and discuss the elements of the artworks displayed.”
Rebecca says the beauty of “Seaweed” is that it explores the notion of art being displayed in an environment outside of the usual gallery parameters.

“Where art interacts and enhances the environment it’s displayed in, and vice a versa.  Where the viewer entertains questions like ‘where does art begin and end?’” she explained.

“It removes the rules and challenges us to see art differently and enjoy the possibilities. It’s a wonderful interaction between businesses, nature locations, art and artists.”

Amongst the art being exhibited are:
•    3D sculptures made of steel by talented Cinnamon Stevens and Pat O’Connell.
•    a ceramic and wood mural by Kirsty Manger,
•    a “Turning Tides” stone and steel propeller installation by Darren Matthew’s.
•    Two beautiful pieces made from hardened fabric and steel by Marina Anderson
•    two interactive living art installation performance pieces
•    a visual delight by celebrated photographers of the Bell Street Printworks & Gallery!!

ArtMAD a local artist group will be exhibiting throughout the weekend in a premise in Torquay Central. ArtMAD includes artists who create a diverse range of artwork.

Kylie Just’s performance “The Mermaid” involves the transformation from mermaid into human through dance, aerial pole and contortion.  It will be a highly visual, graceful and extremely acrobatic performance!

The live theatre pieces will only be showing on the Saturday.

It’s a great reason to come into Torquay and watch the pieces, then stop and have a coffee in the Pear Tree alley, while absorbing the 15 minute digital cinematic journey showcasing beautiful local scenery,

Or to have a beer at “Left Off The Rocks” and sit back and watch Damien Leze’s GetUp&Go Time-lapse film in comfort, playing over the entire week-end.

Included in the ART TRAIL are many works of art by the local kinder and primary school children in local businesses.

The “Seaweed” Installation Exhibition runs continually over the weekend, from the afternoon of Friday 3 December until the afternoon of Sunday 5 December.

Art Trail Maps are available from: Friday 3 December at Surf Coast Tourism and participating businesses.
